It's going to be a big year, we are settled in our home, and planning to get married.

I don't have any New Years' resolutions so much as wishes. The difference?
Resolutions are usually pretentious rubbish concerning diets and vices and how much more or less we are going to partake of these.

My wishes? A relaxed year, more time in the water (So far, so good) and hopefully marrying my better half.

Yeah, I think that's it.

First of all, the goods, here is a quick edit of my first test this morning in very lack-lustre conditions.

Knee-hip high rollers in Durban this morning.

So the premise is this: GoPro generally sell their cameras in kits with some basic mounts suited to specific pursuits such as Surfing/Motorsport etc.

Unfortunately, there is no Bodyboarding edition, so the bodyboard plug-mounts either made by GoPro or other manufacturers are an extra purchase, and you would have a surfboard mount lying around. This is where I found myself, but I started playing with the idea of using the surfboard mount to make a bodyboard mount at home, thus saving some cash and making use of the surfboard mount.

So I devised this little base-plate, to give the surfboard mount (and tether mount) a surface which they would adhere to.

Luckily, I could make these plates at work.

If you like what you see and live in Durban or South Africa, let me know and I will hook you up
If you're further afield, let me know and I can send you a template and you can get them laser-cut or similar near you.

Next, I got an older board on a bed and lay on top of it figuring out where I felt was best to mount it.
I guessed at about right here because we ride predominantly rights around here, and it felt good.

Excuse my mobile phone photos.

Once I was happy I just marked the holes, drilled them out and attached the plates, with mount on top and a flat plate underneath.

This is the result, although I need to trim down the bolts a little as you can see.

Also, as a not, I used dome-capped bolts underneath which I never took a photo of as I thought they'd be more hydrodynamic.

If you have any queries or questions, let me know!

I may take some proper photos and do an instructables soon!

So for my recent 30th birthday I got a GoPro Hero 3 (Black Edition) from Kristie, so that is a new toy which I am starting to play with, and I am hoping to get cracking on a little video project soon.

I also got a voucher for a few mounts/accessories, so I am currently playing with a chest-mount predominantly but I am starting to look around and find some GoPro hacks, as well as playing with my own ideas.

Here's my chest-mount view on a little ride down to the beach on my Yamaha TW200.

The first home-made GoPro hack is an extender-arm for the GoPro mounts I cut and made at work, which I made to play with in the ocean. It allows me to wear my GoPro Chesty backwards and get a cool 3rd person view whilst riding waves. Conditions weren't great for my test, but I am more or less happy with the results.

Very keen to work on some improvements, and add this angle to my arsenal, and more importantly get some fun footage in real waves.

So perspective is a wonderful and curious thing, what can appear grotesque from one angle can look sublime from another... In a far less dramatic and quasi-poetic way, the same thing from two different angles, photographers, and cameras can be quite dan interesting comparison...

The average image above, is captured from a far more interesting angle by Errol Wiles here:

It's always great to see another person's work, especially when it's a best friend. Keep an ear to the ground, because these perspective-doubles have popped up a little before and Mr.Wiles and I have discussed some potentially cool ideas with my water shots vs. his land shots so we may play with that a little more in the time to come.

Now hit that link, keep an eye on his blog and most definitely keep an eye on The Pit where we'll both be submitting our REAL crackers in the foreseeable future!
This old house.

For the last year almost, I have been tying up my late mothers estate and a massive part of that has been sorting out her house in New Germany. My brother and I agreed almost immediately to sell it, we're not really close, so we wouldn't want to share it and it's not in the greatest area so neither of us wanted to bond and buy the other out.

We had it painted, and sorted out a garden which was in quite a sorry state with a lot of help from friends, my wonderful girlfriend and some amazing family. We then went on show and we got it sold fairly quickly which was great, and then waited for the transfer... and waited... and waited... and so on...

Now, almost a year later after dealing with it on my own the last few months and having it rule my life, that house is long gone and I am out, having moved to Durban. Pending the proceeds landing in my account, I will be looking to buy my own home. It's a scary thought but I like to scare myself once in a while so it's pretty exciting to think I am on the verge of a future I couldn't even imagine a few months ago.

It feels great and it should free up so much of my time so hopefully I will have more time for my more creative outlets so keep your eyes peeled.

Shot at a South Coast ex-secret Slab, this now hot-spot of bodyboarding attention is rightfully intriguing bodyboarders from the entire East Coast (it would seem) who come to see her and flirt with her dredging barrels and steppy shallow ledge.

I remember making the early-morning mission to go, knowing it would be good and being very happy to get up close and in the mix. My first swim with my then new water set-up got some results and had me very excited about shooting some more and being up close with such good riders in pretty solid conditions was amazing. I swam for two and a half hours and when I swam in I was on the verge of drowning I was so exhausted.

If you bodyboard or even surf and you don't ever get up with the sun and drive to find something different then you are failing yourself in a massive way. Dawn Patrols are micro-holidays and surf-trips you can fit in to a Saturday morning and they will change your life.
Putting yourself out of your comfort zone is never a bad thing.

Anyway, back to Stephen and not shooting enough,
I am hoping to rectify that in the near future, possibly with a trip North of the border to explore some tall tales of firing, previously unheard of waves, drifting back via feral travellers of dubious character.

Just the kind of thing we all lust after day in and day out, eyes burning as we stare in to the LED glare of our desk-jobs and pore over every media site we can looking at the people we wish we were scoring around the world.

We all need to get out there, and that includes me.

My boss has just told me I can leave early and that's all the excuse I need.
14:15pm on a Friday? Bonus!Mr.Paynterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465665067509894763noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5317783161300652324.post-32856165221272412992012-07-16T11:29:00.001+02:002012-09-08T18:34:01.261+02:00Underwater In-betweeners.So I have lots and lots of photos I never use, at 8fps my 7d shoots a lot of inbetweeners and in this case after-shots which for some reason I keep and never use.

Flipping through showing friends photos, I often get reactions to underwater shots from after I've pulled through waves or just underwater shots I shoot swimming around. I think it can become the norm for me as arrogant as that sounds but I don't look at the in-betweeners but today I stopped to pick out a few.

Here are two from the same day as the last post:
(Where does the time go?!) and got some fun little images.

It re-sparked some passion for me, life has been absolutely manic and seemingly expensive as of late and like a fool the first sacrifice has been skipping surfs and time in the ocean to catch-up and that simply won't do!

Anyway, It was small but thanks to Lady Winter it was clean as can be and a whole lot of fun with some of the guys. I will leave you with just this empty little nugget:

The rest are on my Facebook Page and a few of the gems have been submitted to The Pit.

Speaking of The Pit, keep your ear to the ground because I believe their first printed 'zine will be available in the not too distant future and I for one am excited!Mr.Paynterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465665067509894763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5317783161300652324.post-30590988076772761162012-06-01T16:49:00.003+02:002012-06-01T16:50:21.437+02:00RandomJust a random photo that keeps catching my attention.

It's from Dustin and Jan's wedding Reception and what keeps bending my mind a little, is how it appears photoshopped to me but I didn't desaturate the background at all so the light basically tricked my camera.

I am hoping to shoot tomorrow! I miss the ocean!

I mentioned assignments and shooting different odds and ends a few posts back and this last week was based in portraiture and so I thought I'd post this to show off a quick self-portrait I snapped on Monday night.
(Getting homework done the night before reminds me an awful lot of high-school)

Self-portrait - I love photography and more for myself, I love this little camera.

It is a circa-1960s Petri 7S range-finder camera which my wonderful girlfriend rescued from a friend who was throwing it away and had fully restored by Camera Clinic in Durban. It is beautiful and fully-functional and it makes me so ridiculously happy every time I see it.

I flipped through the mag and was really happy to find 4 images had been run!
Three of them were run in a feature on Stephen Du Preez, local wonder-grom, frothing-surf-energiser-bunny who never stops being amped and one of my favourite riders to shoot!

The other one is NMD SA Team-rider and underrated South Coast ripper, Mark McFarlane who is also great to shoot!

Here are the 4 images in low-res, you can see them bigger and better on their website!
My girlfriend and I are completing a 5-week (1 night a week) beginners' photography course which she found a special for, and it's got me out and about with her, shooting things I'd usually be less interested in.

It's been fun and interesting and I've even had homework (first time in ten years or so) so maybe I'll share some of that!

I'm off to week 4 this evening, and looking forward to it, as well as completing the course and the 1 day advanced work-shop at the end of the course.

It was a fun swim/morning with the boys and we got a few shots, cant hope for much more. Check out Thiel Board Co. if you're looking for a new sled, they are sick, and they're South African and lastly and most importantly they are doing HUGE things to support the local bodyboarding scene!

Otherwise on my end, I have been at weddings, visiting Joburg for the first time and getting my house sold.

Life has been manic!

I've also picked up a new project/money-hole, a 1973 Honda CB500 Four, which I want to restore, which is going to be pretty interesting going but that's more than likely going to be another blog to deal with my other great passion, Motorcycles.

It's from the weekend of Dustin's Bulls Party, and I posted it here just two posts ago so it's not fresh but I am stoked all the same!

It sounds like a problem impossible to have but I am itching to shoot some stand-ups so I can get some proper entrants in to Shot Bru instead of empty barrels all the time! If you're keen, let me know!

Anyway, I will have some more images soon, I haven't shot in the water in a while but I have been keeping myselof busy behind the camera.Mr.Paynterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465665067509894763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5317783161300652324.post-55164912924833615932012-05-04T16:55:00.000+02:002012-05-04T16:57:05.322+02:00Jan and Dustin tie the Knot!So I have been unbelievably busy in the last few weeks, both shooting and working hard at my day job and life in general!
This past weekend I was away for a mate's Bulls Party with the boys which was great. I got a couple of waves in for myself (riding for a change) and had more than a few beers in celebration.

This weekend I am off for the wedding which should also be a whole heap of fun.

Hopefully I'll have a few snaps to share!

Mr.Paynterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465665067509894763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5317783161300652324.post-5888858921676763662012-03-20T08:28:00.001+02:002012-03-20T11:36:42.703+02:00The Surf-City from in the WaterHere's a real quick shot with which I'm probably happier than I should be:

Nice little peak in town, Saturday morning.

This photo could have been a real winner (along with a few others) if I'd not been dicking around with slower shutter speeds playing with motion-blur etc, it's just a great moment as the lip is about to touch down...

Other than that I have been hard at work this past weekend, shooting North Beach on Saturday, and then outside Far Bowl on Sunday for the CKZN Bodyboarding Trials (The first of 5)

Then backing that up with some processing and uploads to my Facebook Page and a few random stand-up shots to Shot Bru as well and then last but 100% not least I have submitted a few shots gathered since I picked up my new set-up to Sixty40 for consideration for the upcoming issue of their online magazine.

Lots of work but I'm loving getting involved!
Mr.Paynterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465665067509894763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5317783161300652324.post-5364001635497970442012-03-16T12:57:00.001+02:002012-03-20T07:59:15.283+02:00Surf-City, South AfricaSo I often get asked if I shoot anything besides bodyboarding and surfing, and the answer is simply, nowhere near as much as I'd like.

One of the things I do like to shoot when I get the chance are panoramas, basically a few images stitched together in a photo-editing suite of your choice to give a wider view of your subject matter.
These are often really effective with landscapes and I have a few choice ones from trips away and hikes, but mine are more often City-scapes and I'm usually pleased with the results.

Here's a quick one from this past Sunday morning, and it's from the pier down in front of uShaka Marine World. The white water is a little rough if you notice it but I haven't worked at sorting it out just yet, I've been far too busy processing surfing shots!

Surf-City, South Africa.

It makes me pretty happy, I love Durban a whole lot (I have a Durban tattoo, no jokes) and I think it's perfectly condusive to our (Durbanites') Ocean-going lifestyle as you can see. Whether it's heaving barrels for the warriors amongst us or some lapping ankle-snappers in the sun, the warm Indian Ocean always has something to offer us.

Be thankful!Mr.Paynterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465665067509894763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5317783161300652324.post-32165512861719389282012-03-14T22:11:00.001+02:002012-03-15T13:59:46.977+02:00Vetchies Reef.So this past Saturday was one of those rare days when Durban's secret reef was rideable.

Now, after all the hype for most of the preceding week, as to how good Durban was going to get I arrived in town to fun-ish (with a capital ISH) little peaks in the bowls but rather washy (too washy to swim with the camera) and very crowded, leaving me disappointed as well as boardless, because knowing how good it was supposed to be, I KNEW I was going to shoot which re-taught me that old addage about counting my eggs.

Anyway, in my disappointment I started investigating any options available to me for some clean, fun surf I could shoot and ended up checking out Vetchies after hearing some rumours about guys scoring it on the high during the week.

This really is Durban's secret reef, only working every now and then, never getting big, but always alot of fun and hidden in plain sight in the shadow of the Harbour mouth! There was quite a contingent on the peak but the majority of the crew were older guys or groms so there were definitely some to be had!

The crew sillhouetted on my swim out.

If you've never surfed it as a Durbanite you should, it's never big and it's always fun when it's on, but be warned, it's pretty shallow (and sharp)

I am now basically in full-on learning mode as I try to get to grips with the 7D and it's feeling good.

I've realised I am going to be getting much fitter with more training than I originally thought, if I want to be getting out there in some solid winter juice.

I'm also going to have to work on my positioning, how close to get to the riders and how deep that means I'm getting etc. It sounds fairly simple but being a bodyboarder for over a decade, my natural instinct is to get under the waves as quickly as possible and out back so I can get some more waves whereas I am now swimming around in the impact zone some of the time waiting for someone to ride by as the set of the day lands on my head (or closer than I'd like).

All that aside, I've got some cool images, submitted a few to Sixty40 and made a few guys pretty happy, hopefully I'll be shooting more tomorrow and raising the bar every swim.

I've recently started a new job which is keeping me on my toes and keeping me busy but it hasn't slowed down my plans to be shooting at a higher level this year with some self-investment and also a little dedication on a personal level.

I am currently training a little, which is a lot more than I've ever done before to be fitter for winter to hopefully get in and shoot when the waves get a little more consequential. That takes care of my increase in personal dedication and then the self-investment comes in the form of new gear which I've hinted at:

I am now the proud new owner of a Canon EOS 7D, as well as a Tokina 10-17mm Fisheye lens and to round it off, a SPL Splash Waterhousing. This is literally a professional level set-up and I'm hoping to learn a whole lot and just push myself and bodyboarding in my surroundings as hard as I can.

So that's what's up, and yes I know it's a little weird to be posting and boasting without some images but I will have some pixel-love soon I assure you. I am also going to be pushing this blog in a more editorial direction because I have started a Facebook Page which I will be getting more on top of in the near future too, this move was just to network and get Mr.Paynter out there, making it far easier for people to track me down and try get some photos and keep up to date on what I've been doing without having to search out the blog!
People can be lazyI guess so I am making it as easy as possible.

I will have a solid update soon after a mission down to a local slab of some consequence with the WBBCSA guys and hopefully more after this weekends' coming colossal swell.

See you in the water soon.Mr.Paynterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465665067509894763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5317783161300652324.post-11805043894600245262012-02-11T19:17:00.000+02:002012-02-11T19:17:40.248+02:00First swim in a while...So it's been a while since I've shot with my housing but I'm not going away any time soon, in fact some big news on my end... I've just ordered a new housing and I'll be ordering my new camera and lens in the next few days.

All very exciting and I'll have more info when my gear lands!
All this means I'm also trying to fitten up a little so I can get in the mix this coming Winter!

So here's a quick flash from my swim, the light wasn't amazing but it was fun and it was some fitness!

Since my post the following photo has come to light and it's rare for me to come across shots of myself so I'm pretty stoked. This is a little small because I pulled it off Facebook but you get the idea and I've sourced the hi-res so it's all good.

Shot by Network 9 / Duncan Harris / His lovely girlfriend

Looking forward to surfing some more soon and more importantly getting back behind my cam! I missed a cracker couple of days this last weekend but I was away with my girl. There's always another day!
Mr.Paynterhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07465665067509894763noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5317783161300652324.post-39815717687456511072012-01-26T11:10:00.000+02:002012-01-26T11:10:23.135+02:00WBBC Warm-Up CompoSo this past Sunday I headed down to Warner Beach for the Network 9 / WBBC Warm-Up Competition, a warm-up for those guys wanting to compete this year and a social event for the rest of us.

We were blessed with great waves and good times, I surfed mens' division, free-surfed between my heats and shot a little from the rocks so it was a good day out and about.

Here are a few of my shots which Network 9 have used and posted on the WBBC page (on facebook) here
